Admission policies, in the school's words

TUSOM reviews applicants for admissions using a holistic review process. This review process considers a range of characteristics and experiences that are aligned with TUSOM’s mission and values. Academic achievements are important; however, we feel that academic metrics such as test scores and grades do not entirely give an accurate description of a candidate’s character, personal journey, resilience, nor their alignment with our mission and values. Someone’s personal attributes, selfreflection, and their path to medicine show qualities that academic metrics may not. In our holistic admissions process, an individual’s academic metrics are considered in the context of the applicant and in a larger framework of their lived experiences. • Commitment to service- In this commitment, what did you learn about the community you served? What did you learn about yourself? • Passion for medicine- On your journey toward medicine, what opportunities did you pursue? How did these experiences shape your view of medicine? Once again, what did you learn about yourself? • Maturity- How have your past experiences taught you about resiliency and adaptability? How has adversity shaped you into the person you are today and want to be in the future? • Leadership- What lessons have you learned by being a leader? What traits have you learned from being a follower of a good leader? • How does your values or your “mission in medicine” align with TUSOM’s mission and values? Academic Metrics As mentioned, TUSOM practices a holistic admission review process. We do not have any minimum GPA requirements or MCAT thresholds to receive a TUSOM secondary application or to receive an interview invitation. With that being said, we do review applicant’s academic history to ensure they can complete our medical curriculum without any delays. Applicants with MCAT scores and undergraduate GPA withing the following ranges are encouraged to apply to our program: • An MCAT Total of 497-500 (40th-50th percentile) and an undergraduate GPA of 3.80 or higher • An MCAT total of 500-504 (50th-62nd percentile) and an undergraduate GPA of 3.60 or higher • An MCAT total of 505 (65th percentile) and above with an undergraduate GPA of 3.30 or higher Only an applicant's total cumulative undergraduate GPA as calculated by AMCAS will be considered with their application. Post-Baccalaureate GPA is factored into the undergraduate GPA. An applicant’s graduate GPA will be considered and can help in the academic review process. All applicants are required to take the MCAT within three (3) years of the year of the application cycle or four (4) years of their matriculation to medical school. Beginning April 30, accepted applicants have the option to “Commit to Enroll” at TUSOM. When an applicant selects “Commit to Enroll” to TUSOM, they should notify all other institutions where they hold an acceptance or position on the waitlist that they wish to withdraw their acceptance or position on the waitlist from that school. TUSOM reserves the right to rescind an offer of admission to any applicant still holding an active acceptance at another institution while having a “Commit to Enroll” status with TUSOM. TUSOM reserves the right to rescind offers of admission from any applicant still holding a TUSOM acceptance while indicating that they either “Plan to Enroll” or “Commit to Enroll” at another institution after April 30th. For applicants accepted after April 30th, the timeline for selecting “Plan to Enroll” will be specified by the Assistant Dean for Admissions. All MD applicants planning to matriculate at TUSOM should select the “Commit to Enroll” option no later than one week before the first day of orientation. Should an applicant have an extenuating circumstance preventing compliance with this procedure, it is the applicant’s responsibility to notify the TUSOM Office of Admissions and seek an extension or exception.
