Admission policies, in the school's words

Applications to the MD and MSTP (MD/PhD) programs are open to both Massachusetts residents and non-residents. Approximately 35% of each incoming first-year class is composed of nonMassachusetts residents. Eligible applicants include U.S. citizens, U.S. permanent residents, individuals with DACA status, and U.S. asylees or refugees. All non-citizens must provide official documentation of their immigration status. Immigration cases must be fully adjudicated with a positive outcome, and applicants must submit documentation verifying this status. Prospective applicants who are awaiting final decisions on their permanent residency applications are not eligible to apply unless their current immigration status is DACA, refugee, or asylee. If an applicant does not hold one of these statuses but is granted permanent residency before the application deadline, they are welcome to apply. All application materials—including MCAT and PREview scores, and proof of immigration status—must be submitted by the published deadline. The only international applicants eligible to apply currently are Canadian citizens and Canadian permanent residents. Canadian applicants must provide official proof of citizenship or permanent residency. Eligible applicants who have graduated from an international college or university must complete at least one full year of coursework in the biomedical sciences at an accredited U.S. or Canadian institution before applying to the T.H. Chan School of Medicine. Please refer to the T.H. Chan School of Medicine Admissions Requirements website for additional information. Applicants currently enrolled in a professional or graduate program must be in the terminal year of their degree program to be considered for admission. Applicants are expected to complete the academic program in which they are enrolled at any time during the application process and prior to possible matriculation at the T.H. Chan School of Medicine. https://www.umassmed.edu/som/admissions/apply/academic-requirements/ We strongly prefer that prerequisite courses be completed at an applicant’s home undergraduate institution during the standard academic semesters and taken for a letter grade. Exceptions may be made for extenuating circumstances—for example, when online coursework was required due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Applicants should provide an explanation in their application for any deviations from these expectations or from other stated application protocols. Secondary applications must be submitted by December 1, 2026. This deadline includes the submission of MCAT and PREview scores. PREview is required for all applicants including those applying to the MSTP (MD/PhD) program and cannot be substituted with CASPer. All MSTP applicants are required to submit a CV which should be uploaded into the secondary application portal. Applicants are expected to provide committee letters when this is available to them. We will accept individual letters when premed committee letters are not available from the applicant's institution. Individuals who have previously matriculated at another medical school are not eligible to apply to the T.H. Chan School of Medicine other than through the transfer process in the clinical year, and only if there is space in the class and the applicant meets the transfer requirements. https://www.umassmed.edu/som/admissions/apply/transfer-to-school/

Mission statement

The mission of UMass Chan Medical School is to advance the health and well-being of the people of the commonwealth and the world through pioneering advances in education, research and health care delivery. The UMass Chan Medical School Office of Admissions is committed to employing the most effective and evidence-based methods to recruit and matriculate future physicians and scientists who will provide the highest quality medical care for our communities in keeping with the mission of the T.H. Chan School of Medicine. Our graduates will contribute in a meaningful way to the elimination of health care disparities and the establishment of health equity in Massachusetts and beyond. Our Office of Admissions advances the mission of UMass Chan by applying a mission aligned review process to every eligible application. We place the highest value on applicant characteristics that reflect our institutional commitments such as commitment to health equity, diversity and inclusion, and service to the community. Our VISTA curriculum has an innovative, integrated structure based on foundational, clinical and health systems sciences. The longitudinal focus topics of health equity, societal forces in health and disease and health systems science are woven into all courses and rotations. At UMass Chan, we believe that patients are whole people, not just a collection of organ systems, and must be seen in the context of their lives. Student and health care provider wellness is highly prioritized as evidenced by the “WIN” week which appears at the end of each foundational block. WIN stands for “What I Need” and is an opportunity for students to rest, focus on health and expose themselves to educational enrichment. Our clinical training sites are located across the commonwealth with housing provided where indicated, offering a rich clinical training experience for our learners. In the Exploration Phase, students participate in 12-week integrated units that ensure exposure to inpatient and ambulatory environments in both acute care and chronic disease management. Our Horizons phase focuses on advanced clinical skills and preparation for residency. A unique feature of the VISTA curriculum which is closely aligned with the UMass Chan mission is our pathways. At the main campus in Worcester MA, students will select a pathway for educational focus during their early clinical learning time. These pathways range from “Entrepreneurship Biomedical Innovation and Design” to “Structural Inequity, Advocacy and Justice”. There are two UMass Chan Medical School regional campuses each with their own pathway focus. At our PURCH program at Baystate Health systems, students focus on Population-based Urban and Rural Community Health. Our LEAD@Lahey program at Lahey Health focuses on leadership, innovation, and Health Systems Science. The T.H. Chan School of Medicine mission is woven into everything we do.
