Admission policies, in the school's words

The UPSOM Admissions Committee will continue to implement a comprehensive admissions process by combining multiple sources to gauge applicants’ knowledge, skills and attributes. This approach will evaluate a candidate's educational history and accomplishments, academic rigor of degrees and course work, performance on the MCAT standardized exam, leadership qualities, exposure to the medical field and career, participation in research activities, and a commitment to community service (paid, volunteer, altruistic, special interest, etc.). Please note the following information and policies: 1. Online course work for prerequisites and labs are accepted and all course work must be completed at a regional accredited academic institution recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (undergraduate, graduate, post-baccalaureate, community college). 2. Traditional grading systems are encouraged; however, the Committee will accept Pass / Fail (Pass / No Credit, Satisfactory / Unsatisfactory) for prerequisite course work. **Students participating in our Special Programs (Guarantee Admit – GAP and the Summer Premedical Academic Enrichment Early Assurance – SPAEP EA) MUST obtain letter grades for ALL required prerequisite course work. When deciding whether to use an alternate or traditional grading system, you should select the option that is best for your application. 3. Online degrees will be accepted with an additional year of in-person instruction at a regionally accredited institution recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation within the United States and Canada. 4. MCAT score considered as it becomes available. Committee will only consider the highest score taken within the 3-year period prior to matriculation. 5. Letters of Recommendation reviewed as they become available. The best letters are from those who know the applicant well and can comment on the competencies considered in a holistic evaluation process. Please visit our Admissions web site, https://www.medadmissions.pitt.edu , for the most up-to-date information.
